Tablets Chemical Name: ZOLMITRIPTAN (zohl-mi-TRIP-tan)
Common uses This medicine is a cerebral vasoconstrictor used to relieve migraine headache attacks as they occur. This medicine belongs to a group of medicines also known as "triptans". This medicine will not prevent or reduce the number of attacks you experience. This medicine may be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Before using Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are taking or have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (including furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, or tranylcypromine) within the last 14 days. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE WITHIN 24-hours of taking other "triptan" migraine medicines or ergot-type medicines. Ask your pharmacist if you are unsure if you are taking one of these other medicines. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking ergot alkaloids, certain antidepressants known as SSRIs, sibutramine, birth control pills, cimetidine, or other migraine medicines. DO NOT START OR STOP ANY MEDICINE without doctor or pharmacist approval. Tell your doctor about any other medicines you take that may also cause drowsiness, such as medicine for sleep, tranquilizers, anti-anxiety medicines such as diazepam, narcotic pain relievers, psychiatric medicines, anti-seizure medicines, muscle relaxants, antihistamines such as diphenhydramine, or cough-and-cold products than can cause drowsiness. Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of these products. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including cluster headaches, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you have other conditions that may increase your risk for heart blood vessel disease (coronary artery disease) including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, family history of coronary artery disease, obesity, or menopause. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have a history of chest pain, heart attack, blood vessel or heart conditions such as coronary heart disease or ischemia, certain types of migraines such as basilar artery migraine or hemiplegic migraine, certain blood circulation problems such as peripheral vascular disease, stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA), or uncontrolled high blood pressure. USE OF THIS MEDICINE in children or adolescents under age 18 is not recommended. Discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of giving this medicine to your child. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
Directions Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. THIS MEDICINE COMES WITH A PATIENT INFORMATION LEAFLET. Read it carefully. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this medicine. IT IS BEST TO TAKE A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE as soon as you notice headache symptoms of a migraine attack. If your headache returns, you may take another dose as directed by your doctor. Allow at least 2 hours between doses of this medicine. IF YOU DO NOT GET A RESPONSE FROM THE FIRST DOSE, do not take additional doses without checking with your doctor. DO NOT TAKE MORE THAN 10 mg in a 24 hour period. DO NOT TREAT MORE THAN 3 MIGRAINE HEADACHES with this medicine in a 1 month period without consulting your doctor. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C), away from heat, light, and moisture.
Cautions DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE without checking with your doctor. THIS MEDICINE IS NOT INTENDED to prevent or reduce the number of migraine attacks that you experience. IF YOU HAVE A HEADACHE THAT IS DIFFERENT than your usual migraine attacks, check with your doctor before using this medicine. BEFORE YOU BEGIN USING THIS MEDICINE, give your doctor and pharmacist a list of all prescription and non-prescription medicines that you are using to treat and prevent migraine attacks. DO NOT USE ERGOT-CONTAINING MEDICINES or other migraine headache medicines within 24 hours of using this medicine. If you have questions about which medicines contain ergot, ask your doctor or pharmacist. BEFORE USING THIS MEDICINE, TELL YOUR DOCTOR if you have had chest pains, heart disease, shortness of breath, fast or irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes. Also tell your doctor if you smoke, have had a heart attack or stroke, have liver or kidney disease, are post-menopausal, or have had any seizures. If you develop any of these conditions while you are taking this medicine, notify your doctor. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
Possible side effects SIDE EFFECTS, that may go away during treatment, include numbness or tingling of skin, nausea, dizziness, or drowsiness. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE USING ADDITIONAL DOSES if you experience wheezing; tightness in the jaw, neck, or chest; or heart pounding. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY AND DO NOT USE ANY MORE OF THIS MEDICINE if you experience shortness of breath; swelling of the eyelids, face, or lips; chest pain; or develop a skin rash or hives. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
If you take too much If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include severe drowsiness.
Additional information If this medicine does not stop or decrease the severity of your migraine attack or if your symptoms become worse, check with your doctor. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children and pets. IF USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
